I translate because I want other to be able to read the novels and other things I've enjoyed reading. I don't use machine translation, as I've spent many years learning Chinese, and am always striving to improve my language skills. Each novel I work on exposes me to new ideas and deepens my understanding, which in turn lets me provide better translations. I like doing it, but it's also a lot of work, so any support people can provide means I have more time to spend on translation than other things to pay the bills.
