Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending Kamuycepnomi, an Ainu fishing ritual celebrating the return of salmon upstream, in Monbetsu, Hokkaido. The ritual has taken on political meaning in recent years as the Ainu protest against Hokkaido and national laws that prevent them from fishing.
