Documentary projects take time, and time is money. These long-form stories are difficult to "sell" when the media industry has gutted entire newsrooms and remaining publications' dwindling photo budgets are mostly reserved for stock and agency image pools with the aim to draw clicks for hard news, features and "content" that is largely driven by ad-revenue algorithms. Deeper, more thoughtful visual journalism and storytelling comes with big up front costs with no guarantee of being recuperated upon publication if ever. But the work is important, and I believe strongly in the power of visual narrative and the need to shine a light close up on the important, current and complex issues shaping our world today.
