Jan Banning is an artist/photographer from the Netherlands. He studied history. In his work the social political environment is put at the fore. His projects also regularly concern fundamental societal structures. Ambitious comparative visual studies such as Bureaucratics (environmental portraits of government employees in eight countries), Law & Order (criminal justice in four countries) and Red Utopia (offices of remaining communist parties in five countries) are examples of this.
Banning’s art work is in private and company collections as well as in those of numerous museums.
His photo series have been published in print and online media such as the New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, The New Yorker, The Guardian, GEO (France, Germany, and International), etc.
