Watched the 'Science Of Being Seen' presentation? Want more information about SOBS in an easy-to-read download format? Back in the winter of 2011/12 I created a presentation called 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) for Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) for use as the third 'crash prevention' module of the award-winning 'Biker Down' course. SOBS is an in-depth look at the causes of the 'Sorry Mate I Didn't See You' SMIDSY collision, and offers simple-to-apply steps to take to avoid the crash. As Biker Down was picked up nationwide, I made the background information my presentation was based on freely available to all fire services to use and many FRS opted to deliver SOBS on their own Biker Down courses. I personally delivered the SOBS presentation until lockdown in 2020. Although I am no longer connected to the fire services, I retain copyright on the Science Of Being Seen presentation and I continue to research the topic and update the talk. And I regularly deliver SOBS online, and take the presentation out on the road by delivering talks in person to motorcycle groups. This is the e-book version of the paperback that covers the talk. It's designed to offer you three elements: :: an understanding of human visual perception which explains why drivers occasionally fail to spot motorcycles :: an explanation of how hi-vis and retro-reflective materials work (and sometimes don't work) so that you can make choices that are suitable to the environment in which you are riding :: a discussion of why learning to use proactive riding techniques to avoid being caught up in the SMIDSY collision are vital in our day-to-day riding If you want to be a safer, more knowledgeable rider, then look no further and download the PDF of the paperback today.
