This 140+ page Free/PWYW PDF is geared towards artist of any skill level, and aims to help you developed a better understanding of composition design. I begin by briefly introducing compositional basics, and then delve deeper into a more abstracted way of analyzing composition that focuses on making active decisions about how to conceptualize space in a drawing. This writeup contains over 100 images, featuring dozens of examples of my own art, layouts I created to exemplify specific topics, famous paintings from various art movements, contemporary works from different mediums, and photographic examples. I also cover composition for comics, and build on an understanding of illustrative techniques to introduce readers to more abstract and free-form methods of comic paneling. Rather than providing any drawing instruction, what this writeup aims to do is help you learn to unpack the decisions being made in a given composition, and identify what elements in a piece are responsible for its impact. Being able to isolate these qualities in your own art and art that inspires you opens up avenues for improvement regardless of medium, style, or technical skill. This is the first of hopefully many PWYW art 'tutorials' from me, funded by my wonderful Patrons over on Patreon.
