Waste free PCT

Español (English below): Este año intentaré completar un trayecto de 4,265km por el Camino de la Cresta del Pacífico (el PCT). Quienes me conocen sabrán que esto es algo con lo que llevo soñando durante 6 años y que por los últimos 3 ha pasado a ser lo que algunos llamarían obsesión, pero a mí me gusta decirle "unas ganas tremendas". Caminar durante 5 meses (+/-) por desierto, montañas nevadas, ríos locos y bosques encantadores, con nada más que mi mochila y unos buenos tennis, es una experiencia que me emociona y un reto que me impone, pero cada parte de mí me dice "ve"... así que ahí voy. Durante la planeación de mi viaje me di cuenta de que había mucha basura involucrada en todo el proceso - desde comprar equipo nuevo y que te lo manden en plástico hasta las incontables bolsitas de barritas o comida deshidratada que devoras día con día-. Esto me empezó a inquietar mucho, pues en mi vida diaria no utilizo plásticos desechables e intento reducir mi huella de carbono en prácticamente todo lo que hago, además de que me parecía un poco absurdo querer ir a disfrutar de la naturaleza y, al mismo tiempo, estarla dañando todos los días. Esta inquietud se convirtió en un llamado, en un proyecto que me tiene sin dormir de la emoción: hacer el PCT sin generar basura (o bueno, generando la menor cantidad de basura posible y haciendo un esfuerzo activo y consciente en cada paso del proceso para reducir mi impacto ambiental).

Lamentablemente, esta no es la forma más barata de hacerlo, y a pesar de que llevo 3 años ahorrando, aún no cuento con el dinero suficiente que necesito para tooodo lo que implica, por lo que me encuentro aquí pidiendo ayuda a quien sea que quiera apoyar esta aventura. También estoy aquí muy contenta de platicarte que el 26% de lo que sea que se recaude será donado al Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental (CEMDA) (¿por qué 26%?, porque el camino es de 2,600 millas… 1% por cada cien millas caminadas). El hecho de que yo pueda ir a hacer esta caminata en E.U.A se debe a que allá hay toda un infraestructura y cultura relacionada con la protección de parques y bosques naturales. Con esta donación quiero poder apoyar a personas que están luchando porque exista lo mismo en México: un contacto cercano y correcto con la naturaleza. CEMDA es una organización no gubernamental, apolítica y sin fines de lucro que trabaja para la defensa del medio ambiente y los recursos naturales. Con reconocimiento nacional e internacional, es una de las principales organizaciones de la sociedad civil ambiental en México cuyo eje fundamental de trabajo es el fortalecimiento, consolidación, armonización, aplicación y cumplimiento efectivo del sistema jurídico-ambiental vigente. Su misión principal es promover y defender el derecho a un medio ambiente sano como un derecho humano fundamental, para que las personas vivan con bienestar y en armonía con la naturaleza (para saber más de las acciones de CEMDA, entra a: https://www.cemda.org.mx). De llegar a mi meta para cubrir mis gastos, el 100% restante se irá a esta y otras organizaciones/asociaciones que trabajan con el mismo fin. Those who know me know that it's something I've been dreaming about for 6 years, and that over the past 3 it's become what some might call an obsession, but I like to call it "the jingles" (that feeling you get when you just want to go, go, go!). Walking for 5 months (+/-) through desert, snowy mountains, crazy rivers and enchanting forests, with nothing else than the pack on my back and a good pair of shoes, is an experience that excites me and a challenge that, quite honestly, scares me a little, but every part of my body is saying "go"... so there I go. During my planning I realized there was a lot of waste involved in the whole process -from buying new gear and getting it shipped wrapped in plastic to the countless granola bar wrappers and dehydrated food bags you devour day after day. This made me very uneasy, since at home I don't use plastic and try to reduce my carbon footprint in practically everything I do. It also seemed ironic to want to go enjoy the outdoors while (indirectly) damaging it every day. This feeling turned into a calling, into a project that keeps me up at night: doing the PCT waste free (well, as waste free as possible and doing an active and conscious effort on every step of the way to reduce my environmental impact). Unfortunately, this is not the cheapest way to do it, and even though I've been saving for the past 3 years, I still don't have the amount I need for everything this entails, which is why I'm here, asking for help to whoever wants to support this adventure. I'm also here excited to share that 26% of the goal amount will be donated to CEMDA (Mexican Center for Environmental Law) (why 26%?, because the trail is 2,600 miles... 1% for every hundred miles walked). The fact that I can go do this hike in the U.S.A. is due to the fact that there's a whole culture and infrastructure around protecting national parks and forests, this isn't the case in Mexico. I want to support people who are fighting to change this. I want to endorse close and respectful contact with nature. CEMDA is an NGO that fights for the defense of the environment and natural resources. Recognized internationally, it's one of the main environmental organizations in Mexico whose main focus is the strengthening, consolidation, application and effective fulfillment of the environmental juridical system.
