Dennis Pulido

Hi, my name is Dennis Pulido. I am an independent illustrator from California whose main specialty is drawing in the style of vintage anime, particularly inspired by 80s and 90s works. Some of my past work include: - 2nd Place Winner for Sega's Phantasy Star Portable 2 Fan Art Contest with artwork included as an in-game item called "Memoir of a Legend". - Finalist in Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga with entry "Soda Pop" - Merit Prize Winner for Animeigo's Gunsmith Cats Fan Art Contest - Artwork included in Udon Entertainment's Mega Man Tribute art book - 3rd Place Winner of Crunchyroll and Wayforward's Shantae Fan Art Contest - Album covers for famous Future Funk artists Yung Bae and Macross 82-99 - Promotional artworks for Valkyrie Saviors and Patriotika from Mount Olympus Comics Why vintage anime style? Pre-2000 era was when anime art was "art" - created by artists born from the aftermath of World War 2, inspired by the Golden Age of Disney, Golden Age of Film, Star Wars, Star Trek, Tokusatsu "SF" culture, and with creativity heavily funded by the Japanese Bubblegum Economy of the 70s and 80s before it "popped" in the 90s. Generations that gave rise to masters of the craft like Osamu Tezuka, Osamu Dezaki, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Rintaro, the Year 24 Group, Katsuhiro Otomo, Mamoru Oshii, Rumiko Takahashi, Satoshi Urushihara, Masami Obari, Masakazu Katsura, Nobuteru Yuki, and more - masters who were prevalent during the hand-drawn era before the anime industry transitioned to full digital at the turn of the millennium as the market shifted, and new younger talent started taking over. The perception of the art of anime has vastly changed ever since the dawn of the 2000s. As younger fans started gravitating towards the more hardcore otaku-centered themes such as "moe" idols and light novel adaptions, a cult of devoted fans have not forgotten the timeless beauty of the classics of yesteryears.
