Disabled Girl on Fire

What do I do? How do I help people? How did this come about? What would we be doing together? Well, let me tell you! This began because I tried for years to volunteer with local volunteer groups. I'm chronically ill and disabled, and it was made clear to me that I was more of a burden than a help due to: scheduling. I'm considered unreliable and they didn't want me. It's next level sh*tty to be made unwelcome as a volunteer. Eventually, I created my own opportunity, because it was clear no one else wanted me. I hope you find a way to help as you can, when you can - I feel so valued by my neighbors and community. It matters a LOT. This is what I love doing. Things really took a turn for the AWESOME when I began running a community gifting group where people can ask or offer items or gifts of service. I've gifted thousands of items. Diverting items from for profit groups and landfills into your local community at no cost but my time and energy - building a strong local community You may wonder where on earth all those items came from? I've become a nexus of connection in my community. Everyone knows to drop their donation loads in my driveway and I will get them to people who need them. My time and labor goes to cleaning, sorting, repairing and gifting the items on my own time, on my unpredictable and unreliable schedule. I've transported thousands of pounds of food through Food is Free to people who can benefit - diverting it from the waste stream. I participated in deliveries of hundreds of USDA food boxes in the pandemic. I facilitated the shipping of boxes of free, prepared foods to disabled people who cannot prepare food themselves. I repaired a Burley bike trailer ($300+ retail) and recruited sponsorship to cover my out of pocket cost so I could give it away to a family with a disabled child in my community. I've been able to give multiple high value items to local families this year like Aerogardens, Kelty hiking backpacks, and more - items that are not necessarily necessities and so far out of reach for many families, but quality of life changing - through my creative Instagram sponsorship. I've also given out gift cards, repaired storm doors, food boxes, baby carriers, and more. I dedicate time to answering questions about disability and social programs for disabled/low income people - this may have a deeper impact than anything else I do, honestly. I help people get the help they need. I change people's quality of life, and help them reach their goals. I blog on low income life, and how to get ahead at disabledgirlonfire.com. Just imagine what I could do with all my energy dedicated to this work and the extra funds to do more! It's important to know that I'm disabled by chronic and degenerative illness. This doesn't mean I cannot do anything. It means my energy is precious and limited, and my abilities can change day to day and that over time, it will worsen. I want the rest of my life's energy spent building an incredible community and changing people's lives. I've worked hard over the last decade to become debt free and keep my needs as small as possible which makes this dream a financial possibility. Your contribution will enable this - we can change lives together. Will you join me?
