Espresso Ristretto is the most concentrated of all coffee drinks, also known as a "short" shot of espresso. It is brewed by using the same amount of coffee as espresso, but the amount fo water forced though it is reduced to 15-20 ml (0.6 fl oz).
This does not mean, however, that Ristretto is simply a half of espresso. As a result of the pressurised brewing process the flavours and chemicals in a typical cup of Ristretto are very concentrated, and a Ristretto properly made is richer, fuller ad bolder than espresso, and contains less caffeine.

Espresso is a drink of small volume (25-30 ml or 1 fl oz) with a rich, concentrated flavour, sharp aroma and slight bitterness. The drink is non-transparent and thick in consistency, and it is usually served in a small cup with a distinctive thick foam on top, also known as 'crema'.
Made with an espresso-machine by forcing very hot water under high pressure though finely ground fresh coffee, espresso is the foundation for many other coffee drinks.

Espresso Romano is a controversial drink, which consists of a shot of espresso and a slice of lemon (or lemon juice or peel).
The majority of professionals in the coffee business do not acknowledge a combination of coffee with lemon.
Despite this, however, Espresso Romano is widely prevalent and has a considerable number of fans around the world.

Conceptually, Espresso Lungo is the polar opposite drink to Ristretto. Extraction time for Lungo can be up to a minute, while for "classic" espresso it is about 30 seconds. Due to length of the brewing process, the flavoursome coffee oils and other chemicals are extracted with greater intensity than during the making of espresso.
As a result this creates a drink of larger volume (55-60 ml or 2 fl oz), but it is less concentrated than espresso.

Sometimes when your taste buds are not quite ready for 'pure' espresso, but you feel like a good cup of coffee, it is possible to add a dab of milk foam in it.
This 'light' version of espresso has been labelled "Macchiato", which means literally 'espresso stained with milk'.
A touch of milk does not considerably change this classic drink, it just softens its concentration.

Espresso Con Panna means "espresso with cream" in Italian.
It is a single or double shot of espresso topped with a cloud of whipped cream. The ratio of ingredients 1 to 1 is a great method to achieve a very tasty coffee.
Conceptually Espresso Con Panna is more a dessert than a drink. It should be consumed with a teaspoon, scooping sweet and cold (preferably natural) cream and bitter hot coffee.

Espresso Doppio is a double shot of espresso (14 gr. of coffee per 50-60 ml or 2 fl oz of water). It should not be confused with Espresso Lungo as their flavours and textures are very different.
The term 'Doppio' is usually referred to Espresso Doppio, but the Italians use it to refer to other drinks if they want a double portion or double concentration of them.

Americano is also known as American coffee. The term 'Americano' was coined during the Second World War when American soldiers diluted espresso with hot water trying to satisfy their preference for more sips in a cup.
Traditionally Americano is made with a classical or double espresso and a considerable amount of hot water. The sequence of adding water or coffee to a cup is not essential, although if coffee is added to water, then the drink retains a distinctive foam of espresso.
