Hi, I’m Mike Gallay, and I collect torn-down fences and discarded construction lumber before it goes to the dump, then rebuild the scraps into farmboxes so city-dwellers can grow their own food. The boxes are deployed on front yards and in laneways, on neglected corners or atop medians. Like the free little libraries, they are a public utility meant for both host and neighbours to water or maintain or harvest. Now hundreds, but eventually thousands will blanket the whole city so you can walk outside on any block and find a meal, and so Toronto will one day be the largest free potaTO farm on the planet, so we may jointly harvest and store for the winter enough plant food to feed us all. Farmbox is a collection of community planter boxes built from discarded materials, which are being spread around Toronto (and other cities soon) so locals may grow plants in underused spaces. It is meant as an encouragement and tool to grow where you live, to help fight rising food costs, to push back against food deserts, to beautify and bring together communities, and to encourage the eating of plant-based food. Do you live in a condo or basement apartment with poor light or without space to grow plants? Do you not have outdoor space to grow food or have never tried? Do you want to transform a patch of weeds near you into an herb garden or a lush tomato patch? Farmbox will make it happen.
