How do we live together in nature? Wood meadows, a managed & productive ecosystem, can achieve this balance. They are a model of how human activity benefits biodiversity. And I want to create a wood meadow in Wales. As research for this work, I must go to the 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration this August. It is being held in Estonia, where the wood meadows are the most biodiverse sites in the world. Donations for registration & accommodation. I am paying the £300 train fare.
Wood meadows are a natural, landscape-scale extension of my wildlife and forest garden design practise. They are a managed, productive ecosystem, comprised of sparsely wooded mixed-species copses with a regularly mown/grazed herb layer. I’ll be exploring how to create productive wood meadows for sustainable livelihoods, owned in common for the people and not for-profit.
