It will bring together authors from a wide variety of academic, professional, and personal backgrounds to write on different topics within that central theme. The series will aim to help readers draw connections throughout military history and better understand the nature of warfare. These will include the physical and mental hardships of campaigning, the material nature and horror of combat, the experience of loss, and the psychological impact of both suffering and committing atrocities, among a myriad other potential examples. A single given volume of Something Like Philosophy might provide insights to the psyche of a Roman soldier, guide the reader through the memoirs of a Napoleonic musketman, and delve into the postwar life of a Vietnam War marine. Likewise it may examine the material condition of a camp follower during the Seven Years War, the archaeological evidence of a sacked Phoenician city, or trace the life of a Chinese factory worker during the Warlords Era. Any time period, any person, and any approach is viable so long as it has the privation, horror, and suffering of warfare at its heart. The style may be biographical, statistical, or anything in-between. However, a preference shall generally be given to articles focusing on primary accounts from “everyday folk,” rather than officials (generals, politicians, etc.) ****************************************************************************** If you have any questions about this project, or have an interest in getting involved with future editions, please reach out directly at BrandonF@nativeoak.org
