The Automatic Computing Engine (ACE) was designed by the famous British computer scientist Alan Turing himself. Turing's theoretical work forms the basis of all modern computers. While Turing's earlier designs were classified and development in the UK was slowed due to funding issues, John von Neumann pushed for what would become the first programmable computer, the ENIAC. Even though it trailed the US ENIAC mainframe in being built, the ACE represented the realization of Turing's dream, and pushed the field of computers significantly with 25 kilobytes of blazing fast memory (detailed in this patent), and the first usage of an early programming language. At the time that it was built in 1950, it was the fastest computer in the world.
