Pine and fir trees are some of my favourite greens in winter. I love them so much that I decided to recreate them in the form of cable knitting on a hat! The Pine and Fir Hat is knitted in the round from the bottom up. The brim is formed with single ribs and 2/2 decorative cables that extend to the main body. There are two larger cable patterns on the main hat: a pine tree-shaped cable with bobbles mimicking the pinecones, and a fir tree-shaped cable that grows till the top tip of the crown. The hat is very stretchy due to the cables and it fits well with all sizes of adult’s head circumferences. - It can be a slightly loose fit for smaller head circumferences (54-56 cm/21”-22”), so if you prefer a tight fit, reduce the needle sizes and use 3mm/US 2.5 and 3.5 mm/US 4 needles instead. The cable pattern is both charted and written. SIZE One size For head circumferences: 54-60 cm / 21”-23.5” FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Finished circumference: 53 cm / 21” Length with brim folded double: 23 cm / 9” Length of the brim: 6 cm / 2.5” SUGGESTED NEEDLES 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needles or double pointed needles for the brim, and 4 mm / US 6 circular needles or double pointed needles for the main hat … or needles that get you the right gauge. For circular needles, I suggest using those with a 100 cm / 40”-long cord with the magic loop method, so that you can use the needles for the crown decrease as well. GAUGE 36 sts (one pattern repeat) = 13 cm /5” on larger needles, or 27.5 sts × 36 rounds = 10 cm / 4” square over cable pattern on larger needles YARN Worsted weight woollen yarn, 234 m / 256 yards. You may use 1 strand of worsted weight yarn, or 1 strand of DK weight yarn + 1 strand of lace weight yarn, or 3 strands of light fingering weight yarn. The sample shown in the photo is knitted with 2 cakes of Holst Garn Coast (55% Lambs wool & 45% cotton, 50 g / 350 m) holding 3 strands together, in colourway Charcoal. The test knitters have used these yarn substitutions successfully: 2 strands of Jamieson’s of Shetland Shetland Spindrift 2 strands of Holst Garn Supersoft and 1 strand of Holst Garn Titicaca NOTIONS stitch marker, tapestry needle, cable needle
